Pure land-맑고 청정한 세상을 꿈꾸며
생성된 것은 소멸하며 누구나 유한한 삶을 산다. 모든 것은 변하기 마련이고 변하지 않는 것은 없으며 인간은 태어나고 늙고 병들어가며 죽음을 맞이하는 생로병사[生老病死]를 피할 수 없다. 이렇게 유한한 인생을 사는 삶인데 우리는 왜 영원히 가질 수 없는 것에 집착하고 가지지 못하면 괴로워하는 삶을 사는 것인지, 괴로움을 벗어나려면 어떻게 해야 하는지에 대한 의문을 갖게 되었다.
감각적 욕망을 채움으로써 오는 쾌락과 행복은 밑 빠진 독에 물을 붓는 것처럼 채워지지 않는 허무함과 한계를 드러내며 이런 쾌락과 행복은 완전한 행복감이라 볼 수 없다. 어떻게 하면 변하지 않는 완전한 행복과 평안함을 얻을 수 있을지, 이보다 더 근원적인 ‘나’라는 존재는 무엇이며 어떻게 정의 내릴 수 있으며 어떻게 살아야 하는가에 대해서 고민하게 되었다.
‘나’ 는 과연 무엇으로 정의 내릴 수 있을까? 눈에 보이는 몸과 시시각각 변하는 생각. 즉, 사람은 물질과 정신으로 이루어졌다고 볼 수 있다. 그러면 이 몸과 마음을 ‘나’라고 할 수 있을까? 우리의 몸은 정자와 난자가 만나 세포분열을 하며 성장한다. 지금 이 순간에도 끊임없이 변하고 있으며 내 의지와는 상관없이 태어나서 늙고 병들며 죽음을 맞는다. 주체적으로 내 몸을 이끌 수 없으며 우리가 원하지 않는 생로병사[生老病死]를 맞는 이 몸을 ‘나’라고 할 수 있을까. 그렇다면 수시로 변하는 생각을 ‘나’라고 할 수 있을까.
‘나’ 라고 할 수 있는 것은 고정 불변하는 실체로서의 ‘나’ 이어야 하는데 우리의 몸과 마음은 항상 변하기 때문에 ‘무아[無我]’라 할 수 있다. 어느 정도 독립적인 기능을 하는 현상으로서의 자아가 부정되는 것이 아니라, 연속적이며 불변의 실체로서의 자아가 부정되는 것이다. 절대적 자아가 존재한다고 생각함으로써 이기심이 생기고 이 이기심은 서로의 평화로운 삶을 해치는 근본적인 장애물이 된다. 즉 보통 사람은 자신이 살아있다는 것과 자신이 가진 것이 영원할 줄 알고 거기에 집착하며 이 집착 때문에 여러 가지로 고통을 받는다. 그러나 사실은 영원히 변하지 않는 존재는 없으며 이 존재에 대한 참모습을 바로 알게 되면 집착하는 마음을 다스릴 수 있기 때문에 마음의 평화를 얻을 수 있다. ‘무아[無我]’라는 것을 깨닫는 것은 염세적이고 허무주의적인 세계관으로 빠지는 것이 아닌 욕망과 화, 집착으로부터 벗어나 자유롭고 행복하고 충만한 삶을 살 수 있게 해준다.
인간의 욕망으로 인해 문명이 발달되었음은 부정할 수 없지만 뺏고 뺏기는 욕망의 역사 속에서 인류가 얼마나 많은 고통을 당했는지, 한 사람의 잘못된 사상으로 인해 얼마나 참혹한 결과를 초래하는지 인류가 출현한 이후 지금까지의 역사를 보면 알 수 있다. 문명의 발전이 궁극적인 인류의 목표일지, 행복이 삶의 목적이라면 욕망의 실현이 과연 행복일지도 의문이 든다. 욕망의 끝은 없으며 그것을 쫓음으로 인해 결코 완전한 행복에 이를 수 없다. 욕망을 비움으로써 완전한 행복과 기쁨, 평온함에 이를 수 있다 생각하며 나는 그러한 세계를 표현한다.
Work notes- 無我
What is created perishes and everyone lives a limited life. Everything is subject to change and nothing remains constant, and humans cannot avoid birth, old age, illness, and death, which is the process of being born, growing old, getting sick, and facing death. Although we live such a limited life, I began to wonder why we live a life of suffering because we are obsessed with things we can never have, and what we must do to escape suffering.
The pleasure and happiness that comes from satisfying sensual desires reveals the emptiness and limitations that cannot be filled, like pouring water into a bottomless pot.
This kind of pleasure and happiness cannot be considered complete happiness.
I wonder how I can achieve unchanging, complete happiness and peace.
I began to think more fundamentally about what the existence of ‘I’ is, how I can define it, and how I should live.
How can ‘I’ being defined? A visible body and ever-changing thoughts. In other words, people can be seen as being made up of matter and spirit. So can this body and mind be called ‘me’? Our body grows when sperm and eggs meet and undergo cell division. We are constantly changing even at this very moment, and we are born, grow old, get sick, and die regardless of our will. Can we call this body, which cannot lead our body independently and faces birth, old age, illness, and death that we do not want, ‘me’? So, can we call the constantly changing thoughts ‘me’?
What can be called ‘I’ must be ‘me’ as a fixed and unchanging entity, but since our body and mind are always changing, it can be said to be ‘no-self’. The self as a phenomenon with a somewhat independent function is not denied, but the self as a continuous and unchanging entity is denied. By thinking that an absolute self exists, selfishness arises, and this selfishness becomes a fundamental obstacle to each other's peaceful life. In other words, ordinary people believe that they are alive and that what they have will be eternal, and they are obsessed with it, and because of this obsession, they suffer in various ways. However, the truth is that there is no such thing as an eternally unchanging being, and if you know the true nature of this being, you can control your obsession and achieve peace of mind. Realizing ‘no-self’ allows you to live a free, happy, and fulfilling life free from desire, anger, and obsession, rather than falling into a pessimistic and nihilistic worldview.
It cannot be denied that civilization has developed due to human desires. However, humanity has suffered a lot in the history of desire to take and be taken, and one person's wrong thoughts have led to disastrous results. We can find out by looking at history so far. I wonder whether the development of civilization is the ultimate goal of mankind, and if happiness is the purpose of life, I wonder whether the realization of desire is truly happiness. There is no end to desire, and chasing it can never lead to complete happiness. I believe that we can reach complete happiness, joy, and tranquility by emptying ourselves of desires, and I express such a world.
