There was an old, lush forest
I enjoyed drawing trees and water
Touching and passion for color glass and light
And the time of contemplation
I met a lovely flower
I met the disappearing leaves
Between creation and disappearance
My work takes the form of harmoniously mixing images extracted from past experiences and unfolding them symmetrically like flowers again. And I would like to contain my own thoughts and stories in it. As time passes and the work progresses, the picture will evolve. It can be our story or personal. And it can be the past, present, or future.
Plane work is one way of visualizing my inner world.
The atmosphere of the work seeks to impress and overwhelm. First of all, I want to give the viewer a visual impression. To do so, we pursue the advancement of visual language. It involves curiosity and pleasure, such as exploration. Freedom is given within the screen to transcend physical limitations. Enjoying it would be a special right only for the artist.
When I was a child, I could see and feel farmland and nature up close in my hometown with a beautiful climate. There was a Buddhist temple built in 577 and a citadel built in 1453. Those two places provided me with a lot from my childhood until I left my hometown. I enjoyed many games and adventures in the architecture and forests of hanok. It is also a good place for landscape painting. There were many good materials for practicing watercolors. For example, old trees and streams, stones in the fortress, hanok buildings painted with dancheong, wooden pillars and tiled beams that make up the construction, and the structures of roof tiles have the traces of time and are very stylish.
If you look for a clear horizontal area that penetrates my life, it is stained glass. Since my 30s, I have been working hard overcoming difficulties with my own ambition to open up my own art world with stained glasses and light to give.
The process of touching colored glass, seeing it in light, cutting it, and reorganizing it is repeated in order to make a stained glass work. It can be said that the colorful glass pieces interact with light in this process is similar to witnessing the transcendent phenomenon of a sacred object and falling into the mystery. After the stained glass work is completed and installed in the building, the stained glass work with its back to the sky sends the light pouring from the sun into the building only through itself. The energy of the color light shapes it produced is at this time controlling the interior of the building.
Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to say that the completion of stained glass lies in light. There are some secrets hidden here, and it took a lot of time to experience them before I could clearly recognize and handle them well, and it took a lot of exploration and experimentation based on them.
My return to painting work came from an encounter with a mysterious and charming flower one spring day.
The color, shape, and destiny of flowers make us think about and realize many things. Flowers are the most beautiful times for plants. They gesture to show off such lovely colors and appearances for meeting their mates. Soon after love is achieved, the petals fall and fruits with seeds are formed. The most beautiful period is to end very short and conceive new life. From the moment the seeds are separated from the mother and settled on the ground, they nonstop start the movement of growth. That's how they become another individual.
Everything in the universe has a fixed time and destiny. It is born, grows, ages, and annihilates. If we look at this more closely and simplify it, we can say that this world is a phenomenon that occurs when the three principles of collection, motion, and dispersion work repeatedly - I believe that only these three elements are immutable truths and are 'the major premise' that includes everything in the universe.
Symmetry, or the repeated shapes of curves and colors, make it possible for a flower to be beautiful. The basic form of symmetry is the shape that everything and every individual in the universe has. It is also an inevitable form in order to exist. In addition, symmetry provides a sense of beauty and stability and makes it perceived as meaningful. It is because we are unconsciously accustomed to the forms of symmetry seen in nature. I have been deeply immersed in the possibilities and mysteries of symmetry shapes while studying stained glasses and light for a long time.
Looking at the history of stained glasses, I felt that the symmetrical patterns of medieval Europe exuded a majestic impression in a huge and harmonious form. While observing it carefully, I learned that it is similar to Korean dancheong. As a result, I was able to recognize again the dancheong patterns that have been common in my hometown since my childhood. When I started working on the painting again, I decided to find the identity of my painting at that point.
The first feature of my painting is that it melts the experiences of color glass and light through paint and brush. The second is that I will visualize everything in the world that is related to me, including memories, people, events, philosophy, and religion from the past to the present. For me, working on a work is like a trip or experiment. The work is the crystal and record of the process.
It is not possible to express all the impressions and full experiences I experienced in the stained glass work of the past in a painting method. It is part of an effort to open up another world through them that are deeply embodied inside. I began my journey to a different level again through more freedom of expression that brushes and paints can give. The evidence (work) left in the process will talk on my behalf. If they are read and understood by people, my lonely journey will be more meaningful.
